When summarising Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, we feel that our editorial director Damien McFerran may have nailed it: "look at it, pure gaming joy on a screen". Few game companies portray 'cute' as successfully as Nintendo — relatively few even bother to try — and this is the epitome of that approach. It takes the deceptively simple but attractive engine used for Super Mario 3D World and makes Captain Toad and Toadette the stars; it's so adorable we want to pinch its metaphorical cheeks.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a repurposing of the old in often surprising ways, something Nintendo's been adept at ever since it repackaged Doki Doki Panic for Mario's first delightful tangent. There's something of Super Mario Bros. 2 throughout the game, in fact, a connection that goes further than the pluckable turnips dotted throughout both, and in their own ways they're both strange, loveable offshoots. There's the danger that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker might seem to slight to some, but it'd be a shame if it was overlooked; this looks very much like a curio that deserves to be cherished.

It’s clear that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker might be another magnificent take on the platform genre from Nintendo’s skillful Mario team. The amount of polish, precision, and ideas on display clearly draw from the genre’s deep history. But it isn’t just a rehash, and each idea tackles a surprising new twist given Captain Toad’s very different skillset. The levels I play are a reminder that this one is going to be pretty challenging. Get ready to sweat when figuring out some of Captain Toad’s levels. I did. And I loved every minute of it.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is an adorable little game, but it's also deviously challenging. Thankfully, it subtly ramps the complexity of its puzzles, keeping you engaged and curious at every turn. It may have a simple premise, but it will no doubt surprise you, and if you're anything like me, it will make you question your puzzle solving skills more often than you'd like. Puzzle lovers and Mario fanatics beware: Captain Toad means business.

It’s surprising how much of an extension Treasure Tracker – at this pre-release stage – feels to Super Mario 3D World. You may not be able to jump, but many mechanics from both the Mario levels and the Captain Toad levels appear in Treasure Tracker. Some levels prove to be surprisingly difficult as well, which shouldn’t be surprising considering World is home to one of 3D Mario’s most difficult trials.

The Sixth Axis
The key question of course is how well Treasure Tracker’s mechanic will play out across the entirety of a game, as opposed to its use in 3D Land as a way of breaking up the action. Certainly from my time with the first couple of chapters the signs are very positive, with each level having enough variation to maintain the player’s interest, and the collectibles and objectives ensuring a solid amount of replayibility as they look to fully complete each section. It does, of course, also benefit from Nintendo’s wonderful presentation, rock solid performance and a well loved character as well, and that should certainly see it attract a number of fans come its release in January.

Those looking for more of the same Captain Toad goodness from Super Mario 3D World will get exactly what they're craving with Treasure Tracker. Nintendo may have also stumbled onto a legitimately good puzzle game that stands out on its own merits. Captain Toad may utilize a lot of the Mario formula, but it uses it effectively and gives it enough of a twist to feel like a totally new experience.
