К разработке архитектуры консоли на этот раз была привлечена nVidia со своей кастомной версией мобильного GPU Tegra. Разработка, по словам самой nVidia заняла примерно 500 человеко-лет, и включила в себя помимо создания железа еще и разработку и адаптацию различного софта (игровые и физические движки, API, работа периферии, оптимизация работы ОС приставки и тп). Обратите внимание на заявление "The high-efficiency scalable processor", высокоэффективный масштабируемый процессор.

The first thing to know about the new Nintendo Switch home gaming system: it’s really fun to play. With great graphics, loads of game titles and incredible performance, the Nintendo Switch will provide people with many hours of engaging and interactive gaming entertainment.

But creating a device so fun required some serious engineering. The development encompassed 500 man-years of effort across every facet of creating a new gaming platform: algorithms, computer architecture, system design, system software, APIs, game engines and peripherals. They all had to be rethought and redesigned for Nintendo to deliver the best experience for gamers, whether they’re in the living room or on the move.

A Console Architecture for the Living Room and Beyond
Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.

The Nintendo Switch’s gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools and libraries. NVIDIA additionally created new gaming APIs to fully harness this performance. The newest API, NVN, was built specifically to bring lightweight, fast gaming to the masses.

Gameplay is further enhanced by hardware-accelerated video playback and custom software for audio effects and rendering.

We’ve optimized the full suite of hardware and software for gaming and mobile use cases. This includes custom operating system integration with the GPU to increase both performance and efficiency.

NVIDIA gaming technology is integrated into all aspects of the new Nintendo Switch home gaming system, which promises to deliver a great experience to gamers.

Давно нужно было создать эту тему в данном разделе с целью агрегирования известной информации о платформе и ее обсуждения. Итак, начнем потихоньку...

В марте 2015 года на очередной конференции Nintendo заявила о своей кооперации с крупнейшим японским производителем игрового контента для мобильных устройств DeNA Co. Ltd. Предполагалось создание сервиса, объединяющего все ниновские платформы, а также смарты и PC.


Кроме этого, теперь уже покойный Ивата подтвердил информацию о разработке какой-то "новой игровой платформы" под кодовым названием NX. Все подробности о новом железе узнаем только в следующем году (предположительно в марте), вот немного из переведенной с японского речи Иваты:

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename "NX". It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Also, Iwata said Nintendo's new membership service would play a key role in NX.
Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service.
Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.

Что характерно, в его речи упоминается сервис, объединяющий существующее железо (то бишь 3DS и Wii U), мобильные девайсы, PC и их новую таинственную платформу NX. И то, что этот сервис будет играть "ключевую" роль в концепции NX =)

То есть их цель не интегрировать портативку и стационар грубо говоря в одну "коробку", а как я понимаю создать масштабируемую архитектуру и использовать одни и те же программные средства разработки для каждой платформы (естественно с учетом железа), облегчить перенос ассетов игр, операционок и встроенных приложений между платформами.

Новый президент Nintendo Kimishima заявил, что "NX - это не прямой последователь WiiU, как Ю была последователем Wii в свое время. Это совершенно другой уникальный, ни на что не похожий, игровый опыт."

“As far as NX goes, I’ve said it’s different and obviously a new experience,” he tells me. “If you look back to the beginning of our conversation today, we talked about the transition from Wii hardware to the Wii U hardware and how difficult it is to explain to the consumer base what is different and new about the new hardware. It’s difficult to convince them to switch from their current platform to the next platform.”

“That being said, I can assure you we’re not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”

По информации DigiTimes стало известно, что якобы в конце первого, начале второго квартала 2016 года на заводах FoxConn начнется массовая сборка NX. Помогать с производством комплектующих фоксконну будут такие конторы как Macronix, Pixart Imaging, Coxon Precise Industrial, Nishoku Technology, Delta Technology, Lingsen Precision Industries и Jentech. При чем будто бы цель Нинтендо поставить в 2016 году ни много ни мало, аж 20 000 000 (!) приставок =)

Nintendo's new game console is scheduled to enter mass production at the end of the first quarter 2016 and despite the fact that the Japan-based company is targeting to ship 20 million units in 2016, the device's upstream component suppliers expect shipments to only reach around 10-12 million units. Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) reportedly has been chosen to manufacture the device, but the company declined to comment on its clients or orders.

The new console is estimated to enter mass shipments in the second quarter. In addition to Foxconn, suppliers such as Foxconn Technology, Macronix, Pixart Imaging, Coxon Precise Industrial, Nishoku Technology, Delta Technology, Lingsen Precision Industries and Jentech will also supply components for the device.

Digitimes Research expects Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 to achieve shipments of 13 and 18 million units, respectively in 2016, and if Nintendo's new console is able to ship 10 million units in the year, the company will then be able to maintain its competitiveness in the market.

В январе 2015 года один из топ-менеджеров AMD Devinder Kumar подтвердил информацию, что у них в разработке находится 2 полу-кастомных APU, один из которых на микроархитектуре x86, а второй на ARM и по меньшей мере один из них имеет отношение к игровому девайсу:

Back in December, AMD chief financial officer Devinder Kumar spurred speculation when he said at an analyst conference that AMD had two semi-custom chip designs in the works. “I will say that one is x86 and the other is ARM, and at least one will be beyond gaming, right. … They [the customers] are going to announce it and then … you will find out that it is AMD’s APU that is being used in those products.”

Game Informer officially confirms that the Nintendo Easter eggs will be returning on Switch. New unlockable characters are in such as police officer Grace Makepiece, a samurai, and a guy in a dinosaur suit. The visuals have been updated as well.
